Welcome to kalwood web works

We're a small web development studio based in Victoria BC Canada. Our speciality is helping small local businesses and non-profits have a monitored web presence when they need a web department ... just not a dedicated full time staff person.

Our philosophy is to make the site fit the client, not the client fit the site. By taking the time to get to know you and your organization, the site can really represent who you are.

This site is part client info, part blog, and part test bed. Welcome!

Notebook graphics cards comparisons

Every laptop has either integrated graphics or dedicated graphics.  The low, low price laptops that you see on for a fantastic price at the box stores usually have integrated graphics, while the laptops that start somewhere around the $1000 range have dedicated.

Here's a few pages to bookmark for what is the latest in dedicated graphics for laptops:

Win 7 looks like a winner

E-mail Print PDF

After Vista left some people wondering what Microsoft was thinking, it looks like the early up take of Windows 7 is increasing.

Microsoft is reporting that they are cautiously pleased with the reception of Win 7, while a web metrics firm (Net Applications), reports that Windows 7’s global usage share broke the 6% mark about 6 weeks into release... based only on site stats that they have access to.

Still early, but it looks like Windows 7 is appealing to most people.

Firefox in 64bit mode

E-mail Print PDF

For the Windows users out there, the maturation of the Windows 64bit editions has been slow to say the least.

For some time now, IE has been available in native 64bit mode.  Firefox, not so much.  Mozilla hasn't embraced the 64bit movement, as one might have expected.

There is an unofficial branch of the official Firefox releases that are compiled for native 64bit use in Windows, put out by fine folks at mozilla-x86-64.com.

The direct link is here:

kalwood web works has recently come back to using the 64bit Firefox builds after a period of them not being suitable/useable for the daily web surfing we do.  After some in-house testing, its now a recommended program.

Windows 7 Family Pack Announced

E-mail Print PDF

Microsoft has announced that it will be releasing a "family pack" for those wishing to upgrade to Win 7, and have more than one computer.

Trying to confirm Canadian availability on this, but its a step in the right direction for a company that is trying to help us forget Vista.

Win 7 upgrade sale

E-mail Print PDF

Microsoft is offering upgrade paths for XP and Vista owners to grab a pre-sale of Win 7 retail for half price, for a limited time.

Pre-order a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $65 or a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $125. That's about half off the estimated retail prices. This offer is available through participating online retailers, like amazon.ca and londondrugs.ca.

The pain of a upgrade copy (have to reinstall XP/Vista to cleanly reinstall Win 7 again in the future) is lessened by the great price and having both 32 and 64bit copies of the OS in the package (one disk each).
